“Look there, on the horizon . . . another Star Trek movie?” And what could possibly make this latest installment to the series even the least bit compelling? How about Spock being played by Syler. “What?”

For those of you who are fans of the TV show Heroes, you will be all-too familiar with Spock’s pointy-eared visage. Watch the trailer and see for yourself. I had a hard time looking at him—pointy ears and all—and not see Syler staring back. Oh, and wait until you hear him speak.

But that’s beside the point. What gives this newest edition to the franchise a reason for “boldly going where so many have gone before” is the director: none other than J. J. Abrams—the same director that gave us Alias, Lost, and his most recent project, Fringe. I think what really makes this latest attempt so palpable a cause for bringing back an otherwise diminished franchise, is J. J.’s ability to bring you a dollop of science fiction and suspense, mixed with drama, and somehow make it all taste right. Now some may argue the point, but I can see no one better suited for the task of reinventing Stark Trek. Take a show like Lost which has defied being trapped inside the sci-fi bubble, and you can see his potential of making this movie reach a broader audience than just the typical “Trekkies.” He seems to relish being caught in the space somewhere between action, drama, and sci-fi. One thing’s for sure: it’s going to be an interesting ride.

One Response to “The “New,” New Frontier

  1. LOL! I was reading the heroes/spock thing… totally true! Don’t get me wrong, I love that Syler is Spock. I’m so not into Star Trek at all but it’s exciting that there are people in there that I recognize. It’s good that I get to see a “good” side to “sylar”. lol, btw, when are you getting your how-to-build-a-webpage for dummies like me thing? I’m WAY excited!
